We’re excited to announce the SeaTrees episode of Blue Horizons, a new branded series presented by the World Ocean Council and produced by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions. This groundbreaking online film series explores our intrinsic connection with the ocean and how it impacts every aspect of our lives – from the ecosystems that support livelihoods to the products we use daily and the water we need to survive.

Join us as we dive deep into the inspiring efforts of local communities fighting climate change by restoring and protecting their vital mangrove ecosystems. Through their stories, we hope to offer a hopeful glimpse into the future of our planet's blue frontiers and inspire you to take action in protecting our Ocean Planet.

With your support ($1 per tree planted) - we work with local communities in Marereni, Kenya to plant mangrove SeaTrees to restore coastal ecosystems.

This project restores and protects 640 hectares of highly degraded mangrove forest within Kilifi County in Kenya. With the help of project partners COBEC (Community Based Environmental Conservation) and the local community, SeaTrees will support the planting of over 775,000 mangrove trees at our new project site in Kenya. Every mangrove you help to plant: 

  • Creates over 600 jobs for the local community.
  • Ensures 40% of these jobs are held by women.
  • Increases access to healthcare and food.
  • Provides training to local villagers to manage mangrove nurseries.
  • Protects local communities from storm surges and sea-level rise.
  • Enhances fishing activities and resources.

With your support  - we work with local communities in Mida Creek, Kenya to plant mangrove SeaTrees to restore coastal ecosystems.

This project restores 100+ hectares of degraded mangrove forest within the Malindi Watamu National Marine Park and Reserve - a UNESCO Designated Biosphere Area + one of the world’s oldest Marine Protected Areas.

Every mangrove you help to plant:

  • Provides sustainable employment and generates economic opportunities for the communities in the Mida Creek area. Community members are then able to provide meals to their families, pay for school fees, and gain access to health care with wages earned through mangrove nursery management.
  • Helps to protect Mida Creek from storm-surges and sea-level rise
  • Creates critical habitat for threatened species including Green sea turtles.
  • Helps protect the surrounding coral reefs from sediment runoff
  • Sequesters carbon in one of the most efficient ways possible. In fact, mangrove forests are 5x more effective at storing carbon than tropical forests.
