About the Project

P.U.R.P.

We are proud to support the volunteer-led efforts of P.U.R.P (Purple Urchin Removal Project) and Seal’s Watersports in their mission to restore kelp forests at Stillwater Cove in Northern California. This grassroots initiative brings together passionate divers who remove overpopulated purple sea urchins, a key step in reviving the once-thriving kelp ecosystem. Without intervention, unchecked urchin populations continue to devastate kelp forests, threatening biodiversity and marine life that depend on these critical habitats.

P.U.R.P is a community-driven group of divers who dedicate their own time and resources to removing these urchins, relying on grassroots participation and partnerships with organizations like Seal’s Watersports, which helps coordinate and promote urchin removal dives. With limited funding and the challenge of keeping volunteers engaged in this long-term effort, the work at Stillwater Cove requires continued support to see real ecosystem recovery.

Seatrees Support

To help sustain this vital restoration work, Seatrees is funding 500 scuba air fills for volunteer divers, making it easier for them to continue their mission. By alleviating some of the financial burden and providing essential dive resources, we aim to encourage more participation and accelerate kelp recovery.

Together, we can bring the kelp forest back to life and ensure the long-term health of this marine ecosystem.

Margaret Seelie | Seelie Studio

About The Artist

Seelie Studio transforms purple sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) into natural dyes, turning an ecological challenge into creative action. With 95% of northern California’s kelp forests lost to these urchins, they’re using art and design to help restore balance and combat climate change.

Their workshops connect creativity with nature, exploring dyes from onions, indigo, and sea urchins while honoring the ancient traditions behind them.

Their apparel and home goods are naturally dyed, making each piece as unique as a fingerprint. Crafted from sustainably sourced silks, wools, and cottons, their unisex designs invite every body to be wrapped in nature’s healing power.

With a slow fashion approach, they celebrate mindful creation, because beauty should be in harmony with the planet.
