Every year on Green Sports Day, athletes, brands, and fans around the world come together to celebrate how sport can be a catalyst for climate action.
In surfing, we’re reminded daily of our deep connection to nature. The ocean is our playground, and protecting it is part of protecting our future. That’s why the Ecoboard Project exists. To push our industry toward more sustainable practices and highlight innovations that reduce the environmental footprint of surfboards.
Traditional surfboards are built with petroleum-based foam and toxic resins, which can have a lasting impact on the planet. Ecoboards, however, are made with materials that do less harm and more good:
• Agave sustainably sourced wood, and flax provide renewable alternatives to synthetic fibers.
• Bio-resin significantly lowers carbon emissions compared to conventional resin.
• Sustainably sourced foam cores reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Switching to these eco-friendly materials may seem like a small change, but when multiplied across the global surf community, it adds up to meaningful climate impact.
Sustainability doesn’t stop at materials. We’re restoring critical coastal ecosystems that protect biodiversity and fight climate change by planting SeaTrees. For every Ecoboard made by our community of Level 1 and Gold Level shapers, SeaTrees plants a mangrove, kelp, coral, seagrass or watershed tree in coastal communities around the world.
These “SeaTrees” not only pull carbon from the atmosphere, but also provide vital habitat for marine life and support local communities. And the best part? Anyone can get involved. You can donate directly to plant your own SeaTree and become part of this global restoration movement.
On this Green Sports Day, we celebrate the progress already underway and the innovation to come. Every Ecoboard built, every SeaTree planted, and every conversation about sustainable design helps move us closer to a future where surfing is part of the climate solution.
At the Ecoboard Project, our mission is clear: do less harm and more good. By leading with innovation, collaboration, and ecosystem restoration, we can inspire a cultural shift in how surfboards are made and how the sport itself can stand up for the planet.
This Green Sports Day, we invite you to join us:
• Ride Ecoboards built with renewable materials
• Support shapers and brands committed to sustainability
• Plant a SeaTree of your own and help restore our oceans and coastlines
Together, we can show how surfing can create a greener, bluer future.
