Bringing Sydney's Kelp Forests Back to Life
We’re on to lucky number thirteen! We just launched our thirteenth SeaTrees project, and first-ever kelp forest restoration project #DownUnder.
We kicked off this project with the help of world champ Tom Carroll, big wave charger Laura Enever, and the Boardriders Foundation - in partnership with the epic marine scientists from Operation Crayweed and the Sydney Institute of Marine Science.
Come with us over 7,500 miles to the land of Crayweed - the South Bondi subtidal rocky reef in Sydney, Australia.
We were so stoked to make this seaweed planting event a community activation with the locals at Bondi Beach - and great have our pals from Spooked Kooks, Surfers for Climate, and Surfrider Australia show up and lend a hand.
This project marks the start of bringing ~ 70 km / 43 miles of kelp along the Sydney coast back to life.
These kelp forests, locally known as Crayweed, once formed dense beds along the Sydney coastline. But their drastic decline has been linked to climate change, poor water quality, overfishing, and the degradation of our ocean planet.
Together with these amazing partners, and your support, we are regenerating these critical ocean ecosystems once again.
Stay tuned for more on this extraordinary activation (and some sneak peeks of our upcoming film on this project).
