Southern California has lost over 50% of its kelp in the last century. Northern California? A staggering 96% loss in just 10 years.
One major reason: the disappearance of sunflower stars - key predators that keep kelp-eating urchins in check. Without them, kelp forests can’t recover.
Meet the Sunflower Star Laboratory
Based in Monterey, this innovative nonprofit is leading the charge to bring back sunflower stars (Pycnopodia helianthoides) through sustainable conservation aquaculture.
Their mission: Protect the diversity of coastal ecosystems by supporting research and developing scalable sustainable conservation aquaculture methods to restore sunflower stars to their historic range in California
