This International Women’s Day, we want to celebrate the Women of the Watershed, specifically a group of women dear to our hearts, and fundamental to our organization - who are helping us regenerate the critical coastal ecosystem in the land of waves and whales South of the Border in Baja, Mexico. And to celebrate, we have a gift for all of you.
Premiering our latest SeaTrees film: Aloha El Dátil 🌞
This film takes us along on a journey through three languages, two cultures, and one incredible group of women who have taken the protection of their homelands - into their own hands.
Join Hawaiian-born Boardriders and ROXY athlete Maluhia Kinimakan as she visits SeaTrees pals and partners WILDCOAST at our project site in Laguna San Ignacio - way down south in the surf, sun, and sand-blessed region of Baja, Mexico - where she visits the Mujeres de El Dátil to learn their story of mangrove restoration at this one of a kind UNESCO World Heritage Site - and the world's last undeveloped California gray whale breeding lagoon.
At the heart of this story is a local womens group known as the Mujeres de El Dátil - who have been trained in mangrove forest restoration techniques, as well as the monitoring and maintenance of restored sites.
The similarities between the Mujeres' culture and Maluhia's goes far beyond the preservation of coastal ecosystems - representing a cross-cultural exchange of traditions, values, ideas, and care for all life that call these shores and waters home - and the power of local stewardship in protecting the global 'Āina that sustains us all - our Ocean Planet.
Thanks to the Boardriders Foundation, we were able to kick off this project with WILDCOAST - both of which have played a leading role in helping us get this project up and running.
