SeaTrees has partnered with San Diego nonprofit Nature Collective to restore the San Elijo Lagoon in Cardiff, CA. The aim is to restore 15,000 sq-ft of salt marsh within the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve. The restoration involves eradicating invasive plant species, reintroducing native species, and maintaining the habitat over two years.
Each sq-ft of watershed restored helps by:
- eliminating invasive species and reintroducing native ones, creating a balanced and thriving environment
- maintaining vital habitats for various animal species, including the federally listed Belding’s savannah sparrow, contributing to the preservation of local biodiversity
- improved channels that enhance tidal circulation, making the ecosystem more resilient to sea level rise and maintaining critical habitats
- the return of eelgrass, which creates a habitat for marine species like octopuses, sea hares, and seals
- improved water quality by filtering and purifying the surrounding waters through the presence of native plant species
- opportunities for community education about coastal ecosystems and their restoration
