Field Notes: Kelp Forests

Field Notes: Kelp Forests

When I was a kid, the California klep forests were vast & healthy...

If you were born before 2013 this is true for you too.

Kelp has declined on the west coast by more than 90% in some areas and while organizations are working to restore what’s been lost, we need your support!

At Seatrees we have supported the work of…

🔹 @reefcheckfoundation who have built a decades long data base to monitor the changes occurring within this ecosystem with their skilled volunteers.
🔹 @scripps_ocean who are leading cutting-edge research that measures how much carbon wild kelp forests actually store. This work could unlock kelp’s inclusion in global carbon markets — turning restoration into a scalable climate solution.
🔹 @sunflowerstarlab who are raising sunflower sea stars and paving the way for their reintroduction to kelp forest ecosystems.
🔹 @p.u.r.p_707 who are gathering on weekends to cull urchins at Stillwater Cove. By focusing their efforts in one area they are helping their local kelp forest heal.

There is no “one way” to combat this issue, but when we all come together we can make massive waves of change! 🌊
