Why investing in kelp science unlocks real climate impact

Kelp forests are disappearing at an alarming rate. In parts of California, up to 90% of historic kelp coverage has been lost due to warming waters and ecosystem imbalance. Yet kelp has enormous untapped potential as a climate solution — if we can prove it with rigorous science.

Through our Kelp Carbon Science project, Seatrees and leading researchers at Scripps are developing the tools and data needed to quantify kelp’s carbon capture. This research is a critical first step toward integrating kelp into global carbon markets, which would create sustainable funding for large-scale restoration worldwide.

Your support accelerates this breakthrough. Funding this research helps establish kelp as a verified climate solution, drives investment into ocean restoration, and protects one of the planet’s most important ecosystems for generations to come.
